Five Essential Tips for Window Box Planting

Window boxes can enhance the look of your outdoor living area. You can also change the plant inside the box according to the season and the weather. Here are some tips you can follow if you happen to have an interest in having window boxes gardening.

1. Choose the material first

Window box planters come in wood, aluminum, wrought iron, and many more. However, PVC is the most popular since it looks similar to wood but it does not rot, crack, or eaten by bugs.

    2. Pay attention to the size

The best is that you can have your window box exactly at the same width with your window. However, if you can’t find the correct size, one or two inch wider or narrower will be okay since the plants will cover the differences once it reaches its peak.

For the box’s width, eight times eight inches wide is sufficient to hold enough water so that the water won’t dry out too quickly. This will allow the root to grow comfortably.

      3. Good soil matters

Plants can grow in very little soil well. The one you need to pay attention is the quality of the soil. Use good quality soil to grow your plants and they will grow as healthy and beautiful as the ones grown in the land.

        4. Drainage

Make sure that your window box has good drainage. Wet soil is not good for the plant’s root. The soil must be able to dry up some time after you water the plant. However, if the location of the box is difficult to water, you can use a type of soil product which can hold water longer.

          5. Location

Choose the plants which suit the location where you put your window box. Is it exposed fully to the sun light? Or is it under the shade? Every plant has different requirements of sun light and heat resistance. Make sure that you pick the right plant for your window box’s location.
