Halls Flooring part 2

Carpeting is a cheaper option but before installing, check how tough it is (the greater the density of tufts per square centimeter, the stronger the carpet) and remember that this is the one room in the house where leaves and dust will blow in from the outside. Consider how the color of the carpet will hold against dust and dirt. A dark colored carpet will show every speck of dirt, as will a plain pale cream. Natural matting is another alternative you may want to consider here as it is less expensive yet hard wearing.

However, the problem with both carpets and natural matting is keeping them clean. To help, make sure that you have a large area by the front door where feet can be wiped and treat the carpet or matting with stain inhibitor early in its life. Small remnants of carpet off cuts can also be bound so that for most the time you can have a second layer of carpet near entrance doors in case excess dirt. Such small carpets can be more easily cleaned and, indeed, removed for formal occasions. So far, this is the simplest and most practical solution for preserving the carpet’s cleanness.
